People in the news
A former employee of my dad’s pleaded guilty to felony charges yesterday. I almost fell off the toilet when I saw the story in the Times. Here’s a Long Island Press story about it for when the Times story is no longer free. The print edition of the times had a recent picture of Mr. Miller. It was kind of upsetting to see how old and fat he had become. He was kind of cute back in the day. My dad is like ultra-ethical. I guess it didn’t rub off.
Here’s a story about a former business associate of mine. Here’s another story, and a press release from the US Attorney. I wrote some custom software for her leasing business in the mid 80s. She was working out of her house in Long Beach, Long Island, at the time. Nice woman. She had some kind of relationship with Bill Casey, the former CIA director, which she mentioned a couple of times. That stands out in my memory. (Bill Casey died days before he was supposed to testify in the Iran Contra hearings. As Wikipedia says: “Many people feel that Casey’s death was convenient, as he avoided testifying at an investigatory committee to be held just days later, the purpose of which was to look into CIA involvement in Iran Contra scandal. His brain cancer was very sudden and killed him just in time.” But I digress.)
Follow the links. I won’t say too much here, but here’s the gist:
Four officials of an Island Park-based leasing company were arrested by FBI agents Friday on charges that they engaged in a complex series of schemes to defraud lending institutions around the country of millions of dollars in loans that were ostensibly meant to finance the leasing of medical equipment.
Oy, I can just imagine my dad’s reaction to all this. “You think this is funny? This isn’t funny.”
While we’re on the subject of people I know who have had their names in newspapers (which seems to happen a lot for someone who’s just a regular shlub like me), I should mention Margo Fox, with whom I went to high school. She guest-wrote William Safire’s Times Magazine column in September of 1999. Now she writes obituaries. Here’s her page on Annotated Times (just click through the logon popups you may get).
