Arcadia sign appears on the Big Cup’s window

It looks like something pretentious and expensive is going into the Big Cup’s space. Just what Chelsea needs.

No Coffee at 22nd and 8th

Another coffee place (Java Boy) and the bar which hosted it (View) seems to have bit the dust. I looked out the window this morning and saw that Java Boy was closed. Walking by, I saw these signs..

There are other choices for coffee in that part of the neighborhood — Murray’s Bagels and of course, Starbucks. But what’s up with the businesses on that block?

PS: I’ve heard the guy who owns View is in the HVAC business (in which capacity he had David Barton gym as a customer), and isn’t gay. Just saying.

Update:
I’ve been away. The View, and a bunch of other places, were shut down because people were naughty there.

The Plane Ride

I’m sitting on a plane right now, on my way to meet Brian in Arizona.

I’m reading The World is Flat on and off (and so is the guy next to me) and listening to a stellar show — 5/19/74.

The guy next to me (that’s his picture), travels for work most of the time. Appropriate for two people reading The World Is Flat, Kevin is in a managerial role and may outsource some of his work (recall, my job got outsourced last year). Kevin’s house was hit by lightening about ten years ago, as was mine about 30 years ago. What are the odds, huh? We learned this about each other while we watched lightening dance in the clouds outside the plane.

He’s on his way home to his wife; I’m on my way to my Brian.

Kevin, it turns out, has an interest in adventure travel. I’ll put him in touch with my bud Danillo, who runs an adventure travel company in Costa Rica.

I had a short, but productive, day at work, capping off a very satisfying week. I feel like I’m finally learning my way around at my newish job. Our project is coming together.

The day started with a laundry meltdown. They didn’t deliver my laundry last night, so I couldn’t pack until this morning, which was a huge pain in the ass and it foiled my attempt to get to work by 8:30 (considering I left at 3:30 I thought it would be nice to arrive before my customary 9:30). I ended the relationship with the laundry guy with a refund and a blaze of fuck-you’s.

Posting from the Treo, on the plane. I’ll send the post when we land. I’m not as fluent on the Treo as I’d like, and there aren’t links (I like posting a lot of links) and I’m not sure about HTML support in flickr, so for now there’s none of that.

(Kevin has a Treo, too, and we tried to beam but it didn’t work. Kevin has never beamed. Apparently there’s also something in The World Is Flat about taking one’s picture and posting it on the internet.)

Trump NJ Construction Progress

Donald Trump is building the tallest residential building in New Jersey, right outside my office window. Here’s how it looks today.

This is my first post from my Treo, via flickr.

Where have all the people gone, my honey?

Lee posted some pictures of some people I knew at Hamilton. I’m hoping that I have found a way to get back in touch with them. I’ll let you know.

Update (in response to Lee’s comment):

I tried to find Jenny St. but it appears her parents are no longer on the Cape. Teresa S. is not in Oakland (or at least I coudn’t find her). Any ideas where we might look Larry?

Yes. David Davis, who was in one of the pictures, wrote a book called PLAY BY PLAY — Los Angeles Sports Photography 1889-1989. The book was based on an exhibit David curated at the LA Public Library. The exhibit was reviewed on lavoice.org. The reviewer, Mack Reed, disclosed that Davis Davis is a “good friend.” I know Mack Reed as a fellow Well member. I emailed him this morning requesting that he put me in touch with David. If I hear from David, he may know how to reach Teresa and the others.

Plans for the weekend (Chinese New Year and Urban Outings)

Gym after work tonight, then the Urban Outings Mixer.

Tomorrow night Brian and I are going to a Chinese New Year party.

I’m hoping we’ll have a mellower weekend than the last two. No closet construction, no power tools, no alarm clocks, no visits to Home Depot, Bed, Bath and Beyond, or The Container Store.

Well, maybe we’ll get another shelf or two. And maybe a king-size bed (we haven’t been sleeping well, perhaps because of the slight difference in our schedules, perhaps because of the noise from the street or the light — although we finally hung shades in the bedroom this week — or maybe because we’ve been sleeping in a full-size futon and we’re both big boys). And maybe bar stools for our kitchen counter.

And MAYBE I’ll finally unpack, and get the piles of my crap out of the second bedroom, so Brian can start moving his stuff in.

On another front, I just spoke to my landlord’s rental agent. They have an application on my old apartment, for a February 1 occupancy. Woo. Woo.
